Cluster Visualization in Parallel Coordinates Using Curve Bundles
نویسندگان
چکیده
The polygonal lines traditionally used in parallel coordinates have two substantial limitations. First, they possess only C0 continuity, which causes the “cross-over” problem. Second, for large datasets, the lines become cluttered, obscuring inherent structure in the data. We introduce a model for curve bundles in parallel-coordinates plots to overcome these problems. The C0 polygonal lines are replaced by C1 continuous piecewise Bézier curves to alleviate cross-overs. The Bézier curves can then be bundled to visualize data with given cluster structures and hierarchies. The curve bundles are efficient to compute, provide visual separation between data clusters, reduce visual clutter, and present a clearer overview of the dataset. A controlled user study with 14 participants confirmed the effectiveness of curve bundling for parallel-coordinates visualization: 1) compared to polygonal lines, it is equally capable of revealing correlations between neighboring data attributes; 2) its geometric cues are as effective as color coding of polylines in displaying cluster information. Curve bundling thus allows the color perceptual channel to be applied to other data attributes.

Unraveling High-Dimensional Torus Networks for Network Traffic Visualizations
Torus networks are widely used in supercomputing. However, due to their complex topology and their large number of nodes, it is difficult for analysts to perceive the messages flow in these networks. We propose a visualization framework called TorusVis that uses modern information visualization techniques to allow analysts to see the network and its communication patterns in a single display an...

We present a controlled user study evaluating the effectiveness of bundled curve representations in parallelcoordinates plots. Replacing the traditional C0 polygonal lines by C1 continuous piecewise Bézier curves makes it easier to visually trace data points through each coordinate axis. The resulting Bézier curves can then be bundled to visualize data with given cluster structures. Our results...
متن کاملRevealing structure in visualizations of dense 2D and 3D parallel coordinates
Parallel coordinates is a well-known technique used for visualization of multivariate data. When the size of the data sets increases the parallel coordinates display results in an image far too cluttered to perceive any structure. We tackle this problem by constructing high-precision textures to represent the data. By using transfer functions that operate on the high-precision textures, it is p...
متن کاملVisually Effective Information Visualization of Large Data
Recent technology developments produce an increasingly large volume of information. Therefore visualization of these data requires sophisticated and efficient methods that take the amount of data into account. The information often gets lost or hidden in displays of traditional information visualization techniques. A significant improvement can be achieved using clustering and visual abstractio...
